The Virgin of Éire by Mainie Jellett – Collector’s Edition Art Print
The Virgin of Éire (c.1940) stands as one of the most significant modernist religious paintings in Irish art. Created by Mainie Jellett (1897–1944), a pioneer of Irish Modernism and a leading voice in the spiritual and cultural revival of the early 20th century, this work unites faith, national identity and abstraction in a powerful visual statement.
Painted during the early 1940s—a time of political uncertainty across Europe—Jellett believed in the power of art to restore cultural clarity and spiritual direction. Trained in Paris under Cubist masters André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she transformed Cubist principles into a uniquely Irish visual language, using rhythm, colour and sacred symbolism to reimagine the nation’s identity through modern art.
In this composition, the Madonna and Child are flanked by St Patrick and St Brigid, the patron saints of Ireland, evoking the protective and spiritual guardianship of the nation. Jellett believed that Cubism offered a “modern template” through which Ireland could reclaim the clarity of vision found in medieval Celtic art. This work embodies that vision—harmonising geometry, colour and sacred symbolism in a modern expression of Irish faith and nationhood.
The Virgin of Éire is held in the National Gallery of Ireland (Bequeathed, 1978) and measures 64 x 92 cm. It was exhibited at the inaugural Irish Exhibition of Living Art (IELA) in 1943, an institution founded and chaired by Jellett to support Ireland’s modern artists and shape the future of Irish art.
