The Song of the Mad Prince – Harry Clarke, 1917
Collector’s Edition archival print, professionally framed.
Harry Clarke (1889–1931) was a leading figure of the Celtic Revival and the Irish Arts & Crafts movement. Inspired by Symbolist literature, medieval legends and spiritual motifs, Clarke produced some of the most luminous stained-glass and illustration work of early 20th-century Ireland. This miniature panel was created in 1917 and draws on a poem by Walter de la Mare to conjure an image that is at once poetic, mysterious and deeply decorative. The original panel is part of the National Gallery of Ireland’s collection, where it remains a highlight of their display.
Clarke explored innovative techniques here, acid-etching and layering two pieces of coloured glass to achieve an intensified, jewel-like palette. The effect is a rich layering of reds, blues, golds and deep shadows, giving the work an almost otherworldly glow when viewed with light. The composition—featuring the prince and shadowed figures—invites a narrative filled with emotion, symbolism, and dreamlike tension.
