Add a defining piece of Irish Modernism to your collection with this museum-quality reproduction of Composition (Chessboard, 1925) by Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) — one of Ireland’s earliest abstract painters and a pioneer of modern art.

Created during her formative years in Paris, this striking work reflects the direct influence of Cubism and Jellett’s mentors André Lhote and Albert Gleizes. The bold checkerboard pattern, interlocking forms, and restrained palette of ochre, cream, black, and green reveal her exploration of balance, rhythm, and spatial harmony. Yet beneath its analytical precision lies a quiet lyricism — the beginning of the personal, spiritual abstraction that would define Jellett’s later masterpieces.

After studying under William Orpen in Dublin, Jellett moved to Paris in 1920 with fellow artist Evie Hone, where they immersed themselves in the avant-garde. Under the teachings of Lhote and Gleizes, she learned to break down form into geometric structure, analysing rhythm, colour, and proportion in pursuit of visual order and transcendence.

This archival-quality reproduction is printed on Master’s Edition, 250 gsm matte museum paper, capturing every tone and texture of the original. Our solid-wood frames, available in Black, White, or Natural Oak, are made from FSC-certified oak and ash, protected by shatterproof plexiglass, and arrive ready-to-hang with a full mounting kit.
