Created during Lavery’s return visits between 1907 and 1909, the scene reflects his deepening connection to Tangier and his coastal retreat, Dar-el-Midtah. Against the wind-swept skies of the Straits of Gibraltar, a solitary figure—believed to be either Lavery’s daughter Eileen or his muse, the German model Mary Auras—meets the elements in a moment of windswept grace.

Lavery’s brush captures sensation as much as place: the restless air, the flick of fabric, the rush of surf over sand. A more intimate counterpart to Girls in Sunlight (1908–09), A Windy Day distils his Tangier palette into a refined, atmospheric statement—ideal for collectors and design-led interiors.
