About the Artwork:
Bartholomew Colles Watkins (1833–1891), A View of the Killaries, from Leenane
Oil on canvas, 32 x 50 cm. Bequeathed by F. Moore, 1909. NGI.636.
In 1875, Watkins began his first sketching tour of Connemara, and over the next fifteen years, he returned frequently to capture its rugged beauty. This work depicts the Killary Harbour, a stunning eight-mile-long fjord nestled between Galway and Mayo. Seen from Leenane, the towering Mweelrea Mountain, the highest peak in Connacht, looms over the scene. The painting also highlights local fishing life, with boats carrying fishermen across the calm waters, ready to embark on their herring-catching journey.
Watkins’ artistry reflects the influences of earlier Irish painters like James Arthur O'Connor and Francis Danby, yet his style is distinct. Rather than emphasizing the dramatic aspects of the landscape, Watkins sought to portray a peaceful, serene Ireland, capturing the soft interplay of light on the landscape. The reflections of the mountains on the water add to the calmness of the scene, enhancing the sense of harmony between nature and the fishermen.
About the Artist:
Born in Dublin, Watkins entered the Royal Dublin Society Drawing Schools in 1847 and became renowned for his landscape paintings, particularly of mountain scenery. A regular exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Watkins spent his life dedicated to portraying Ireland’s natural beauty. Tragically, he passed away during a sketching tour in Kerry in 1891, having contracted a severe cold while isolated from help
